In June, 2014, Nava was diagnosed with breast cancer. She elected to undergo a double mastectomy, because the cancer spread to some lymph nodes under her left arm.
After undergoing surgery in July, Nava received 16 chemotherapy treatments, and 33 radiation treatments. She is currently participating in a clinical trial that involves receiving infusions of the immunotherapy drug Herceptin, and an experimental vaccine that will hopefully work to prevent the disease from returning.
Nava chose to share her experiences via blogging because she feels the world needs to know that breast cancer is not a pleasant experience, and should not be thought of as such. It is different for every woman, and should not be wrapped up in shiny pink ribbons or fuzzy feather boas. It is so much more than that.
